Recovery for endurance athletes
Endurance fatigue rarely announces itself. It accumulates across weeks of adequate-looking sessions, and the first unmistakable sign is often a race rather than a training day.
Why volume hides the signal
High-frequency, moderate-intensity training produces a low, constant background of fatigue that athletes adapt to psychologically. They recalibrate what normal feels like, which means self-report alone drifts along with the fatigue rather than flagging it.
That recalibration is the core problem, and it is why a recorded baseline is worth more here than in almost any other setting. The data does not adapt its expectations; the athlete does.
It is also why single readings are close to useless in endurance blocks. Everything is slightly suppressed, all the time, and the question is whether the slope is going anywhere.
The signals that carry most
- Sleep duration and consistency
- High-volume training raises sleep need while early sessions and long weekends often reduce sleep opportunity. That squeeze is frequently the real constraint on an endurance block.
- Resting heart rate over weeks
- More stable than HRV and therefore more readable against a slow-moving background. A steady upward drift across a build is one of the clearer indications available.
- HRV as a multi-week trend only
- Daily HRV in endurance training is noisy enough to mislead. The rolling direction carries signal; individual mornings mostly do not.
- Motivation across the block
- Often the earliest thing to move, and entirely invisible to hardware. Worth collecting deliberately rather than hoping it comes up.
Squad-scale monitoring
Endurance coaches frequently carry large rosters — a club squad, a group programme, thirty or forty athletes at different points in different seasons.
Reviewing each individually every week is not realistic, and monthly review is too coarse to catch a slope before it becomes a bad race. Prioritisation is what makes the middle ground possible: read the roster continuously, surface the few whose direction has changed.

- Should endurance athletes monitor HRV daily?
- Collecting it daily is fine; reacting to it daily is not. In high-volume training the day-to-day noise is large relative to the signal, so the useful read is the multi-week direction.
- How do I distinguish a hard block from too much?
- Whether the athlete rebounds. Signals suppressed during a build and recovering on an easier week is training working. Failing to rebound across a recovery week is the observation worth acting on — and if it persists unexplained, worth a medical conversation rather than a guess.
- Does Loadwell read training data from Garmin or TrainingPeaks?
