The best check-in is the one your athletes still complete in week six. Almost every design decision follows from that.

Compliance is the whole problem

A wellness questionnaire that takes four minutes will be completed enthusiastically for about ten days. Then it gets skipped on busy mornings, then on ordinary mornings, and within a month you have partial data on your most engaged athletes and nothing on anyone else.

That failure mode is worse than having no check-in, because missing data is not random. The athletes who stop filling it in are disproportionately the ones under pressure — which is exactly the population you built it for.

So length is not a matter of convenience. It is the variable that determines whether the system produces usable data at all.

What is worth asking every day

A small number of subjective ratings, consistently collected, outperforms a detailed form collected sporadically. The specific scales matter far less than daily repetition.

Energy
Broad, and that is a feature. It picks up the general state a lot of narrower questions are circling around.
Mood
Often moves before physiology in periods of non-training stress — work, exams, life. Wearables are poor at this and athletes are good at it.
Soreness
The most direct read on whether the last session landed the way you intended.
Motivation
A slow drift downward here across a block is one of the more useful early warnings a coach gets, and nothing else in the stack reports it.

What to leave out of the daily ask

Anything you will not act on
Every extra field costs compliance across the whole roster. If a field would not change what you do, it is costing you data on the fields that would.
Free text as a requirement
Optional notes are valuable and athletes use them when something is genuinely worth saying. Required notes turn into 'good', 'fine', 'ok' within a fortnight.
Detailed training logging
If it belongs in your programming tool, leave it there. Duplicate entry is the fastest way to lose a roster's goodwill.

Wearables and check-ins are complementary rather than redundant. A wearable measures things an athlete cannot self-report, particularly overnight. An athlete knows things no wearable can infer: that they are ill, stressed at work, or that yesterday's session felt far harder than it should have.

In practice the phrase worth remembering is that wearables tell you what changed and athlete context helps explain why. A drop with an obvious explanation needs a different response from the same drop with none.

It also means the roster still works for athletes with no device. Their baseline is built from self-report, which is less precise but far from useless.

How do I get athletes to actually do it?
Keep it genuinely short, make it the same every day so it becomes automatic, and — most importantly — visibly act on it. Athletes who see their check-in change what a coach says to them keep doing it. Athletes who suspect it disappears into a database stop.
Is a daily check-in better than a weekly one?
For recovery, yes, because you are looking for change and weekly sampling is too coarse to see it. A weekly reflection can be valuable, but as a separate thing rather than a replacement.
What if an athlete misses days?
That should be visible rather than silently interpolated. Missing data is information, and a system that quietly fills the gaps hides the athlete who has disengaged.
