Recovery for hybrid athletes
Running and lifting in the same week produce fatigue that behaves differently, clears on different timelines, and shows up differently in the data. That is what makes hybrid recovery genuinely harder to read.
Two fatigues, one athlete
Strength work tends to announce itself. Soreness is localised, the athlete can feel it, and they will usually tell you about it without prompting.
Aerobic accumulation is quieter. It builds across weeks of sessions that each felt fine, and it often shows up first in overnight physiology and sleep rather than in anything the athlete would think to mention.
Run both in the same block and the loud signal masks the quiet one. An athlete reporting manageable soreness can be accumulating aerobic cost that nobody is looking at, because the obvious question — how sore are you — has already been answered reassuringly.
What to watch
- Sleep, as the leading indicator
- In high-frequency mixed training, sleep duration and consistency often move before anything else. It is also the variable an athlete has most control over, which makes it the most useful conversation.
- Direction across weeks, not days
- Aerobic accumulation is a slope. Look for an athlete whose baseline has drifted across a block rather than whoever had the worst single morning.
- Soreness read against the session
- Sore two days after a heavy lower session is expected. Sore with nothing to explain it is a different observation entirely, and only the training context distinguishes them.
- Whether easier weeks land
- The most informative pattern in hybrid training. If signals do not rebound on a lighter week, the total load is outrunning adaptation regardless of how any individual session felt.
Interference is a programming question
The strength-endurance interference effect is real and well documented, but managing it is a programming decision about session order, spacing and emphasis. Recovery monitoring tells you how a given arrangement is landing for a given athlete; it does not tell you how to arrange it.
