Training load and recovery
Load models tell you what you asked of an athlete. Recovery data tells you what it cost them. The gap between the two is where coaching decisions actually live.
Two different questions
Training load is a description of the stimulus: duration, intensity, and the accumulated stress that implies. Load models are good at this and they are prescriptive — you can plan with them.
What load does not tell you is how a particular athlete is absorbing it this week. Two athletes with an identical prescribed load can be in very different states by Thursday, and the difference shows up in sleep, resting physiology and how they feel long before it appears in the plan.
So load is about what you did. Recovery is about what happened. Neither substitutes for the other, and a coach reading only one is guessing about the other.
The patterns worth recognising
- Load up, recovery down, then recovering
- The normal, intended pattern of a hard block. Not a problem — this is training working.
- Load up, recovery down, staying down
- The pattern worth watching. If recovery signals do not rebound across a lighter period, the accumulated cost is outrunning the adaptation.
- Load steady, recovery drifting down
- Usually points outside training — sleep, life stress, nutrition, or something the athlete has not mentioned. Worth asking rather than adjusting the programme.
- Load down, recovery still poor
- A deload that is not landing. Sometimes a sign the deload was not deep enough; sometimes a sign the cause was never training in the first place.
Where Loadwell sits
Loadwell does not model training load. It has no TSS, no chronic or acute load, and no automatic ingestion from any training platform — athletes can type a short note about what they trained, and that is the extent of it. If load modelling is central to how you coach, keep the tool that does it; Loadwell reads the response side.

- Do I need a load model to monitor recovery?
- No. Recovery monitoring works from the response signals alone. A load model makes interpretation easier because it explains why a drop was expected, but it is not a prerequisite.
- Does Loadwell calculate training load?
- No. It does not model load and does not import training data from any platform. It reads recovery signals and self-reported context, which is a different input entirely.
- How long after a hard session should recovery bounce back?
- It varies enormously by athlete, session type and training age, and any specific figure would be made up. The useful question is what normally happens for this athlete, which is exactly what a personal baseline gives you.
