Recovery monitoring without wearables

Waiting until every athlete owns a device means never starting. Structured self-report on its own supports a real baseline — coarser than sensor data, and a great deal better than memory.

What you actually lose

Being straight about this first: without a wearable you lose overnight physiology. HRV, resting heart rate and measured sleep duration are all unavailable, and those are genuinely useful signals — particularly for detecting accumulation an athlete has not noticed yet.

What you do not lose is the ability to detect change. Change detection needs a consistent repeated measurement and a baseline, and four daily ratings provide both.

The honest summary is that self-report gives you a lower-resolution version of the same picture, arriving slightly later for physical accumulation and slightly earlier for stress and motivation.

Making self-report rigorous

Same questions, same scale, every day
Rigour comes from repetition, not from question count. A varying form produces data you cannot compare against itself, which defeats the entire purpose.
Keep the direction consistent
Soreness is the usual trap. Decide once whether 5 means very sore or not sore at all, and never change it.
Baseline per athlete
Some athletes never rate above 4 and some never below 3. Only their own history makes a rating interpretable.
Track compliance as a signal
Someone who quietly stops checking in is telling you something. Without a wearable this is the main early warning you have, so watch it deliberately.
Add one free-text line
Optional, never required. It is where the genuinely useful information turns up — and where an athlete mentions the thing a sensor could never know.

A reasonable middle path

Run check-ins across the whole roster and let athletes who already own a device connect it. You get a consistent baseline for everyone and better resolution where the hardware happens to exist, without asking anybody to spend money.

Is self-report data reliable enough to act on?
For detecting change within an individual, yes — provided the questions are consistent and you compare an athlete to their own history rather than to the squad. It is less precise than sensor data, not unreliable.
Can Loadwell be used with no wearables at all?
Yes, and for many coaches it is where they start. Check-ins alone produce a baseline and a status. Oura is the only wearable integration that is live, and it is optional.
How long until check-in-only data becomes useful?
About two weeks, the same as any baseline. You need enough history to know what normal looks like for that athlete before a deviation means anything.
