Managing a roster where everyone owns something different

Mandating one device is the tidy answer and almost nobody can make it stick. The practical answer is a monitoring approach that does not depend on which brand an athlete happens to own.

Why standardising fails

Coaches who try to standardise usually run into the same three walls: athletes have already spent money on something else, a subscription device adds a monthly cost you are effectively imposing, and a proportion of any roster will not wear anything to bed regardless of what you ask.

Even when standardisation works it decays. Devices break, subscriptions lapse, people switch. Within a year a standardised roster is a mixed roster again.

So the durable design is to assume mixture from the start and build monitoring that degrades gracefully rather than breaking.

What makes mixed rosters workable

Compare within an athlete, never between them
This is the key move, and it happens to solve the device problem for free. If every athlete is measured against their own rolling baseline, it does not matter that their devices disagree with each other — you are never comparing across them.
Use a common subjective layer
A short daily check-in is the one input every athlete can provide identically, whatever they wear. It is the backbone of a mixed roster, with device data as enrichment on top.
Be explicit about who has thin data
An athlete with no device and sporadic check-ins cannot be assessed. That should be visible as its own state rather than quietly reported as fine — a false all-clear is worse than an admitted gap.
Accept different resolution per athlete
One athlete gives you sleep stages and HRV; another gives you four ratings. Both are usable. Insisting on parity means throwing away the better data to match the worse.

The duplicate-signal problem

One wrinkle worth knowing about before it bites: an athlete who connects two sources — a watch and a phone health app, say — can produce the same night twice, with different numbers.

There is no universally correct resolution. What matters is that the system picks a consistent preferred source per athlete rather than letting whichever synced last overwrite the other, because inconsistent switching creates baseline noise that looks like a real signal.

Should I just pick one wearable and require it?
You can, and some well-funded team environments do. For most coached rosters the cost, the resistance and the drift back to mixture make it more trouble than designing for mixture in the first place.
Is data from athletes with no wearable worth collecting?
Yes. Self-reported energy, soreness, mood and motivation support a personal baseline of their own, and they frequently move before physiology does. It is coarser than sensor data, not useless.
Does Loadwell support Garmin or WHOOP?
Not today. Oura is the only live wearable integration. Athletes on other devices participate through check-ins, and you can register which integration you need from the homepage — that is how they get prioritised.
