HRV monitoring for coaches
Reading one athlete's HRV trend is straightforward. Doing it for thirty, every morning, against thirty different baselines, is the part that needs software.
The problem software actually solves here
HRV is individual to a degree that makes cross-athlete comparison meaningless — two athletes in equivalent condition can differ by a factor of three. So every athlete needs their own baseline, and every reading has to be interpreted against it.
That is arithmetic, not insight, and it is exactly the sort of arithmetic that stops happening reliably at roster scale. The failure is not that coaches cannot interpret HRV; it is that comparing thirty readings to thirty remembered baselines before 8am is not a sustainable habit.
What Loadwell does with HRV
- Rolling per-athlete baseline
- Each athlete's HRV is compared against a rolling window of their own prior readings, which excludes the current day so one bad night cannot drag down the baseline it is measured against.
- Deviation, not absolute values
- The output is a percentage change against that athlete's normal, which is comparable across a roster in a way raw milliseconds never are.
- Counted alongside other signals
- HRV moving alone is weak evidence. HRV moving with sleep, resting heart rate or self-reported soreness is considerably stronger, and the status reflects how many signals agree.
- Honest about thin data
- An athlete without enough recent readings is marked as not assessable rather than reported as fine. A false all-clear is the failure mode that loses a coach's trust.
Which devices, honestly
Oura is the only wearable integration that is live. Garmin, WHOOP, Apple Health, Polar and Coros are not connected, so HRV from those devices does not reach Loadwell today. Athletes on any device still contribute self-reported context, which supports a baseline of its own.

- Oura only, today. It is worth being blunt about that on a page like this: if your roster is mostly on Garmin or WHOOP, the HRV side will not populate and the check-in layer is what you would be using.
- Does it set an HRV threshold?
- No, and it would be wrong to. Thresholds are the thing personal baselines exist to replace — significance depends on how variable that particular athlete normally is.
- How long before HRV becomes useful for a new athlete?
- Around two weeks of readings before deviation means anything. Until then they are marked as having limited data rather than assumed healthy.
