WHOOP data for coaches

WHOOP is the mainstream wearable most explicitly designed around recovery rather than around workouts, which makes it a natural fit for coached athletes — with two real caveats.

Last reviewed:

What is useful for recovery

Continuous physiology
A screenless band worn continuously tends to produce more complete overnight data than a watch an athlete takes off, and completeness is what baselines need.
A recovery figure built for the purpose
Where other devices bolt recovery onto a fitness tracker, WHOOP's whole model is built around it. The framing an athlete sees is closer to what a coach wants them thinking about.
Strain alongside recovery
Having a load proxy and a recovery figure in the same system makes the relationship between them easier to discuss with an athlete.

The coaching caveats

The first is cost. WHOOP is subscription-based, so recommending it to a roster means recommending an ongoing expense. That is a real barrier for a general coaching population in a way a one-off purchase is not.

The second is the familiar one: it is built for the wearer. WHOOP has offered team-oriented features at various points, but the core product is a personal one, and a coach with athletes across several devices cannot rely on any single manufacturer's ecosystem for a roster view.

There is also a behavioural caveat worth naming. Because WHOOP surfaces recovery so prominently, some athletes start training the score rather than the plan. Worth a conversation when you first see it.

Loadwell and WHOOP

Loadwell does not read this device today. Oura is the only wearable integration that is live, alongside athlete check-ins, which work with any roster regardless of hardware. Integrations are prioritised from coach demand and there is a request link on the homepage.

Frequently asked

Is WHOOP better than Oura for recovery?
They are close enough that wear compliance matters more than the choice. A ring is easier to sleep in for some people; a band is easier for others. The one an athlete actually wears every night wins.
Does Loadwell integrate with WHOOP?
No. Oura is the only live wearable integration. WHOOP is among the most requested and you can register that on the homepage, but it does not work today and we would rather say so plainly.
Should I worry about athletes fixating on their recovery score?
It happens, and it is worth pre-empting. Frame the score as one input to a conversation rather than a verdict on the day, particularly with athletes inclined to read a low number as permission to underperform.
