Garmin vs WHOOP for coaches
The short version: Garmin is a training computer that also tracks recovery, WHOOP is a recovery tracker that also estimates load. Which is right depends on which gap you are filling.

Compared for coaching use
From each manufacturer's public documentation at the last reviewed date, scoped to what matters for coached recovery.
| Garmin | WHOOP | |
|---|---|---|
| Built around | Training and navigation | Recovery and strain |
| Session data | Extensive — pace, power, GPS | Estimated strain from heart rate |
| Overnight data | Depends on wear; watch often charging | Usually strong — worn continuously |
| Cost model | One-off purchase | Ongoing subscription |
| Consistency across a roster | Varies widely by model | Consistent — one device |
| Coach roster view | Not in the consumer app | Not in the core product |
| Loadwell integration | Not connected | Not connected |
| Best for | Athletes whose training data matters as much as recovery | Athletes where recovery is the question |
How to choose
If the athlete is an endurance or hybrid competitor whose sessions need measuring — pace, power, route — Garmin is doing two jobs and WHOOP is doing one. That usually settles it.
If the training is largely gym-based or mixed-modal and the open question is how the athlete is absorbing it, WHOOP's continuous wear tends to produce more complete overnight data, which is the input recovery baselines actually need.
The cost structures point different ways too. A subscription is easier to start and harder to justify indefinitely; a watch is a larger single decision that then costs nothing.
Neither is connected to Loadwell
This comparison is here because coaches ask it, not because we integrate either one. Oura is the only live wearable integration. Whichever device an athlete chooses, they can take part through check-ins today, and you can register which integration you need from the homepage.
Frequently asked
- Which gives better HRV data?
- Both sample overnight and both frame HRV against the individual's own range, which is the right approach. Completeness of wear will make more difference than the choice between them.
- Can I coach from either without asking for screenshots?
- Not from the consumer apps — both are built for the wearer. Roster-level visibility needs something built for a coach, which is a separate category of product.
- Does Loadwell work with either?
- Not today. Oura is the only live wearable integration, and athletes on any device participate through the daily check-in.
