Garmin data for coaches

Garmin is the most training-rich ecosystem an athlete is likely to own, and the most inconsistent one to coach from, because the range spans a decade of very different hardware.

What is useful for recovery

Overnight HRV
Newer devices report an overnight HRV status against the athlete's own recent range rather than a raw number. That framing is right, and it is the single most useful recovery output Garmin produces.
Resting heart rate
Stable, easy to interpret, and a reliable slow-moving signal. A resting heart rate drifting up across a block is worth a conversation.
Sleep
Duration is dependable; stage breakdowns from a wrist device should be treated as indicative rather than precise. Duration and consistency are what to coach on.
Training load and intensity
The genuine differentiator — Garmin sees the session as well as the recovery, which most recovery-focused devices do not.

The coaching problems

The device range is the first one. A five-year-old watch and a current one do not produce the same recovery metrics, so a roster on assorted Garmins is not measuring the same things. Check what each athlete's model actually reports before building a process on it.

The second is wear compliance. Garmin's recovery figures depend on overnight data, and a watch that charges at night produces nothing. Athletes who wear it only for training get you training data and no recovery data.

The third is the one that affects every consumer wearable equally: Garmin Connect is built for the individual. There is no coach roster view, so at any real squad size you are reduced to asking athletes what their numbers say.

Loadwell and Garmin

Loadwell does not read this device today. Oura is the only wearable integration that is live, alongside athlete check-ins, which work with any roster regardless of hardware. Integrations are prioritised from coach demand and there is a request link on the homepage.

Frequently asked

Which Garmin metrics should I actually watch?
Overnight HRV status, resting heart rate and sleep duration, read as trends against that athlete's own normal. Body Battery is a reasonable summary but, like any composite, it hides which input moved.
Can I see my athletes' Garmin data automatically?
Not through Loadwell today — Garmin is not connected. Garmin does operate a coach-facing product of its own, and athletes can share files manually, but neither gives you roster-level recovery prioritisation.
Is Garmin's sleep tracking accurate enough to coach on?
Duration and consistency are dependable enough to act on. Treat stage breakdowns as directional — that caveat applies to all wrist-worn devices, not just Garmin.
