The best wearables for coaches

Almost every wearable review is written for the person wearing it. The coach's question is different: what can I actually see, and can I act on it across a roster?

The coach's criteria are not the athlete's

A consumer review ranks wearables on comfort, battery, app design and how motivating the daily score feels. None of that predicts whether a device is useful to you.

What matters to a coach is narrower: does it measure the things recovery actually turns on — sleep, heart rate variability, resting heart rate — does it do so consistently enough to build a baseline, and can the data leave the athlete's phone in a form you can use.

That last point is where most of them fall down. Nearly every wearable is architecturally a single-user product. There is no roster view because the company never imagined one.

How to choose for a coached athlete

Prioritise night-time compliance
Sleep and overnight HRV carry most of the recovery signal. A device that is charging at 3am measures nothing, however good its sensors are. This is the single most common reason a roster's data turns out to be unusable.
Consistency beats accuracy
For baselining you need the same device measuring the same way every night. A slightly biased sensor that is stable is more useful than an accurate one worn intermittently, because you are reading change rather than absolute values.
Do not mandate a purchase
Requiring a specific device is a good way to lose athletes who already own something else. A monitoring approach that works with self-reported context as well as hardware survives a mixed roster.
Check what you can see, not what it measures
A device measuring beautiful data you can only view by asking the athlete for a screenshot has not solved your problem.

Which wearable should I ask my athletes to buy?
In most cases, none. Mandating hardware creates a cost barrier and a compliance problem, and a coach who insists on a specific brand usually ends up with partial data anyway. Work with what athletes already own and fill the gaps with check-ins.
Does a more expensive wearable give better recovery data?
Not reliably. Above a fairly low bar, consistency of wear matters more than sensor quality, because recovery monitoring reads change against an athlete's own history rather than absolute accuracy.
Can I see my athletes' data without them sending screenshots?
Only through something built for it. Consumer wearable apps are single-user by design and none of them offer a coach roster view. That gap is the reason products like Loadwell exist.
